Hallmarks, in relation to precious metals, mainly jewelry, are tiny punches on every piece of jewellery. The purpose of hallmarking is to indicate that a piece of jewellery conforms to particular fineness/purity standard (in Ireland: standard defined by relevant state regulations).

In Ireland, the only authority that can legally hallmark jewellery (and other items of precious metals, if required) is the Irish Assay Office in Dublin.
